Socialization is a process that allows a person to learn about attitudes, values, social psychology, and actions that are considered appropriate by society or by a particular culture. A person needs to know about socialization to survive in society.

The socialization process allows someone to behave by the values and norms that apply to society to avoid Asocial behavior. Asocial behavior is a behavior that contradicts the values and standards of society.

Socialization occurs through interhuman interaction. Someone learns something from the people who matter most in his life, such as close family members, good friends, and teachers. Nevertheless, humans also learned from the people they met on the street, which they saw on television, film, magazines, or the Internet.

Socialized Things

The things socialized in the socialization process are the knowledge, values, norms, and life skills. Knowledge of the rules and culture of a society is associated with education and teaching, both formally and informally. In the end, people involved in the process can internalize these social values and norms.

The internalization process is studying or accepting values about the part of the value system and the norms that exist on him. If those values and standards are fully internalizing to a person, then this will control his behavior.

Psychologically, that person will find it difficult to violate the prevailing values and norms. Skills in culture are socialized through the teaching and training process, both formally and informally.

Types of socialization

In sociology, the socialization process is usually differentiated into two, namely as follows:

Primary Socialization

Primary socialization is the first socialization that is undertaken and serves to bring people into life as members of the community. Primary socialization takes place in families, friends, and schools.

Secondary Socialization

It's advanced socialization where a person is undergoing in society's real-life sector, such as in the workplace or environment. In this way, socialization that occurs in the family is divide into:


Repressive socialization

Repressive socialization is a socialization process that prioritizes punishment, one-way communication, full compliance of children with parents, and the dominant role in the process.


Participatory socialization

Participatory socialization prioritizes the use of motivation, reciprocal communication, appreciation for child autonomy, and sharing responsibilities in the process.


The purpose of socialization

Through socialization, the community teaches a person what to know if he or she wants to be together with the community and learn if he wants to develop his or her potential. Socialization has the following objectives.


Growing Basic Discipline

Many disciplines must socialize with the community, such as using the toilet to research with scientific methodology.

Undisciplined behavior arises from encouragement to follow his own will. That action ignores the consequences and long-term satisfaction. Discipline limits the fulfillment of immediate satisfaction by way of postponing or changing the fulfillment of someone's wishes for social approval or future purposes together.

Discipline at school requires every student to enter the school on time, contrary to some students' tendency to laze up and leave for school in the morning.

If you obey the ego, it is better to sleep in the morning and a little bit of noon, especially in the winter. However, for the sake of the student's future, a lazy heart's encouragement must be limited by school discipline rules.

Embedding Aspiration or Ambitions

Society transfers or moves common cultural values that determine how people live and transfer or move specific life goals. The community whose economy build with advanced technology must motivate some of its members to aspire to become scientists and technology experts.

Religious organizations must encourage people to aspire to become teachers or others as leaders of specific religions. The socialization process must embed various ideals as an ideal and must achieve by a person.

Teach The Social Roles and Supporting Attitudes

Through the socialization process, everyone learns how to coordinate their behavior with others' behavior and how to adapt to a particular environment according to the role it holds. Every citizen expects to account for the presence of others in their social relationships.

Moreover, everyone is expecting to perform specific roles in community life. Leaders and members, students and teachers, each play a different yet complementary role.

Each role contains the value of virtue, feelings, attitudes, and personality traits that match the position in question. For example, each student expects to have a passionate attitude and attention to learning. A teacher wishes to have a character or attitude of patience and wisdom.

Teaching Skills As Basic Preparation for Participating in Adult Life

Many social character skills, like writing letters, living neighbors, using a phone and ordering food in restaurants. Social skills can be a pre-essential condition for effective participation in political or other organizations.
